International UI Green Metric 2020: NIT Silchar ranked 6th in India, 275 globally – Barak Bulletin

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is an initiative of Universitas Indonesia which is being launched in 2010. The National Institute of Technology has fetched a great spot in the rankings for 2020.
As part of its strategy of raising its international standing, the Universitas Indonesia hosted an International Conference on World University Rankings on 16 April 2009. It invited a number of experts on world university rankings such as Isidro Aguillo (Webometrics), Angela Yung-Chi Hou (HEEACT), and Alex Usher (Educational Policy Canada). It was clear from the discussions that current criteria being used to rank universities were not giving credit to those that were making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and thus help combat global climate change. That is how the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking was born.
The aim of this ranking is to provide the result of an online survey regarding the current condition and policies related to Green Campus and Sustainability in Universities all over the world.  Since 2010, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings has ranked universities worldwide according to six indicators: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water, and transportation, and education. 780 universities from 85 countries were ranked in 2019. In 2020, more than 900 universities have been ranked across 84 countries.
What comes as a matter of pride for Barak Valley is that National Institute of Technology Silchar has won the sixth rank in India and 275 globally.
“We are extremely happy and congratulate all the stakeholders for such accomplishments,” said Sivaji Banerjee, director of NIT Silchar. “We are a naturally blessed and ‘greenspiring’ campus. Such accomplishments motivate us to build a sustainable environment for future,” he added.
Wageningen University & Research, Netherlands secured the top spot across the world. University of Oxford, United Kingdom was second on the list. Mangalore University secured the 132nd position and became the highest-ranked among other Indian universities.
