Plan your month with our January 2024 events calendar of the best activities, including free things to do, winter events and our favorite concerts
With the holidays behind us, January sparks images of a long plod through gray skies and chilly temperatures for most of the country—but not so here in L.A. Sure, it’s chilly, relatively speaking, but the weather is still perfect enough to tackle most of our favorite things to do outside, even with a slight uptick in precipitation. In fact, take advantage of those clear, post-rain days with one of the best hikes in L.A. Or head to one of the city’s best beaches while it’s still deserted for the season. Start the year off right with the city’s best activities and things to do in our January events calendar.

The first Rose Parade in 1890 was staged to show off California’s sun-kissed climate. The tradition is still going strong, complete with elaborate floral floats, musical performances and marching bands. The parade—held on New Year’s Day in Pasadena—kicks off at 8am at the corner of Green Street and Orange Grove Boulevard before making its way east onto Colorado Boulevard. Near the end of the route, the parade turns north onto Sierra Madre Boulevard and concludes at Villa Street, where you can see the floats showcased. Bleacher seats are available for a price, but you can grab a spot on the sidewalk for free.

For one summer in 1987, a carnival popped up in Germany with traditional rides adorned with artwork by Salvador Dalí, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, David Hockney, Sonia Delaunay and a couple dozen others. And then… it kind of just vanished, sent off into storage for decades. But now, thanks to a couple of art world partners and Drake, Luna Luna has been revived in L.A., restored and reassembled in a soundstage in Boyle Heights. You can read more here about our experience at Luna Luna.

No need to camp out in the cold to see the annual Rose Parade firsthand this New Year’s Day. Instead, watch the L.A. tradition from home and mosey on over to Sierra Madre and Washington Boulevards in Pasadena to view the floats post-parade. Though the thick crowds can rival the parade itself, this is the best opportunity to view the floats close up. The stunning float showcase is a unique opportunity to see the intricate floral handiwork in person, from just a few feet away.

Discovery and wonder once again inhabit the illuminated installations in Descanso Gardens’ holiday tradition. Each year, the botanical garden’s nighttime experience masterfully mixes hands-on art installations with atmospheric, luminescent forests, all against a background of uplit trees and shimmery sound effects.

More than 150 wines plus wineries, food trucks, music and a beautiful setting—sounds like a perfect Saturday to us. Uncorked Wine Fest returns to Union Station, sending wine fiends into a frenzy with some incredible varietals. General admission will be able to sip from 6 to 9pm, while VIP gets an extra hour to imbibe starting at 5pm. Tickets include all beverage tastings, with food sold separately.

Live on the Westside, but want to dine at some of the city’s best restaurants without getting on the freeway? Now you can, via this new weekend dining series happening this winter at the Santa Monica Proper. The new Siete restaurant space—formerly the home of Gabriela Cámara’s Onda—will host a series of tasting menus that wrap up in the new year with Alimento (Jan 12–13). Each prix fixe meal will offer choices per each course plus supplemental beverage pairings.

An L.A. comedy scene fixture for the past few years, Kate Berlant has adapted her strange stream of consciousness style into a one-woman show (our friends at Time Out London gave it five stars during its run there). Directed by Bo Burnham, the show finally heads to the L.A. area with a monthlong residency at the Pasadena Playhouse.

These California legends of classic rock may not live life in the fast lane any more, but the surviving members are still traveling the world to bring their slick, plastic country-rock and perfect harmonies to their whopping international fanbase. For its final tour, the band is returning to the Forum.

The second day of the festival has been canceled due to the mass shooting in Monterey Park. We extend our sympathies to all those impacted by this devastating turn of events.
Ring in the Lunar New Year in the heart of L.A.’s Chinese community at this annual two-day Monterey Park festival. This street fair takes over five blocks of Downtown Monterey Park with folk art, delectable bites and a carnival zone. The action kicks off Saturday morning with firecrackers and dragon and lion dances. Past fests have brought in over 100,000 people over so plan ahead; the city suggests utilizing the free parking shuttles at Mark Keppel High School (501 E Hellman Ave) and El Repetto Elementary School (650 Grandridge Ave).

Paramore, the 1975, the Black Keys, Thirty Seconds to Mars, BUSH, Sum 41, Yellowcard, lovelytheband and the Last Dinner Party top this radio-friendly rock fest at the Honda Center.
